| Is the Truth Offensive? I've been thinking a lot more about what it means to proclaim "an offensive Gospel". It is offensive because people don't like hearing the truth about their lives apart from God. As someone said last night, when we witness to someone, we're basically asking them to "get out of the driver's seat," and put Jesus there. As I was studying this morning, God brought two questions to mind: 1. As Christians, should we be offended by the Gospel? No 2. Should the Gospel we preach be offensive? Yes Try explaining that to people! The more I thought about it, I was like, "WOW!" (I've been saying that an awful lot lately!) Why has this gotten a hold of me so much? I think it has everything to do with the culture of political correctness and tolerance that we live in. Christians have started sitting on their hands, saying, "If I want to be able to share the Gospel, I can't offend anyone, because then, they will be turned off to what I'm saying." I've realized that if the truth of the Gospel that we share is not offensive (thru the truth exposing our natural condition apart from Christ) then we haven't shared the *whole* Gospel, and as a result, many may find themselves having to face the question of whether or not they are ashamed of the truth of the Gospel! I believe there are two sides to the Gospel: 1. God, who is lovingly compassionate, sending Jesus to die to set man back in right-standing with Him 2. God, who is our holy, righteous and just judge. He, therefore, cannot tolerate sin. (When Jesus died on the cross, God looked away from Him, because He couldn't look at the sin that Jesus took on our behalf.) |
